The Thau Lagoon is a must-visit destination in Hérault! Located 24 km from Club Farret and Vias Plage, we recommend taking a detour to visit it during a boat trip and savor the best oysters in the South of France.
It is the largest body of water in the Occitanie region. Around it, you'll find iconic towns in the Languedoc region such as Sète, Bouzigues, Mèze, and Marseillan. Numerous water activities take place here, including windsurfing and diving. However, the Thau Lagoon is internationally renowned primarily for its oyster farms.
To cultivate the Mediterranean oyster, some clever techniques were required. Since there are no tides, the famous Bouzigues oyster was created through suspended farming. Cultivated throughout the lagoon, the Thau Lagoon is a unique setting with its hundreds of oyster tables and oyster farms stretching for kilometers. One thing is for sure, the oysters from the Thau Lagoon have nothing to envy from those of the Atlantic. Thanks to the water quality in the lagoon, the oysters produced here have a unique taste: hints of hazelnut accompanied by a briny freshness.
At Mas du Mourre Blanc in Mèze, oysters are more than just a family affair! Cousins and uncles cultivate the oysters, which the brothers Nicolas and Geoffrey then sell at Cabanes de l'Étang. You've probably seen Nicolas before. Behind his counter, he easily chats with his customers, who come to get good advice on cooking their fish or simply share a friendly moment.
Every morning, at dawn, he goes to the Sète port fish market to make a great selection of fish straight from the trawlers. Passionate about his job, he wants to offer you fresh, high-quality products, "fish from our region, caught the same morning in the Mediterranean!"
At Cabanes de l'Étang, located in the main alley of the campsite, he also offers a wide selection of shellfish, mussels, shrimp, and crabs. The platters are available for takeaway or to enjoy on the spot... And why not be tempted by a glass of Picpoul de Pinet, a Languedoc white wine, while he prepares your order. At Nico's, you never say no to an aperitif!
This year, you can find Nicolas and his "Cabanes de l'Étang" at Club Farret. In the main alley, near the entrance to the Pirates' pool, he welcomes you every day from 10 am to 2 pm and from 5 pm to 9 pm. On-site, he offers you the opportunity to taste Bouzigues oysters produced on the family farm, fresh fish, shellfish, and crustaceans.
